Trail Overview

Heading south on 191, take a left onto Moose Creek Road; this trail starts off fairly gentle with plenty of camping areas to make basecamp. Beautiful aspens, golden late September, line the first stretch of this ride. There are a couple of intersections, so make sure to follow along on your device. There looks to be sections that would be muddy if recent snow or rain were in the area. Along the way, we passed a couple of sedans, so very accessible early on. Tamphery Creek Road would require clearance. The trail finishes along Portal Creek, viewing west towards the Spanish Peaks.

The trail is as described in this site. Well maintained. There are a couple intersections that require you to pay attention to the map, but easy to execute. There are some deep ruts around mile marker 4 that require attentive driving. Take caution around blind turns as motorcycles and ATVs also are on the trail.

Fun, took a couple hours, there’s lots of deep pot holes, but my 2nd gen Sequoia handled it all really easy, albeit I have a slight lift(1.7 inch), and slightly bigger than stock tires. 4lo was nice on a couple of the steep sections. Would be really tough after fresh rain. It was pretty dry mid day.

For the first about 3 miles the trail is nice and easy. After that it gets a lot more technical. There are pretty deep potholes and some sections with lots of mud. We ended up turning around about halfway through the trail because we came up to a long section (about 200ft) of deep holes and heavy mud.

Trail was pretty snowed in after about a mile. Very passable as long as you have 4x4 and good ground clearance. I will say there were a few ruts that got a little technical due to the snow and mud and how deep they were. Tree down on the other side of trail as you start going down Porter Creek, but should be able to maneuver around. Watch for hunters!

Trail was beautiful, as I climbed it became snowed in, track could possibly be very icy this time of year. I feel that the trail could be rated higher in certain parts due to the depth of ruts and muddy puddles but was not a problem in a jeep with 37s
