Trail Overview

Little Blackfoot is an easy, scenic dirt and gravel route perfect for beginner offroaders, families, and those seeking access to pristine Montana backcountry camping and trailheads. Stretching approximately 12.8 miles near Elliston, Montana, the route begins off Highway 12 as a paved road for the first 4 miles, passing through private property before transitioning to a wide, unpaved road. The trail follows the scenic Little Blackfoot River valley, climbing gently from an elevation of 5,111 feet to a peak of 6,133 feet, with a total elevation gain of roughly 1,146 feet. Because the road is typically two vehicles wide and features gentle grades, it is highly accessible, though drivers should remain alert for sharp corners with blind spots along the winding mountain terrain. Throughout the drive, visitors will find numerous dispersed camping spots, including spacious areas capable of accommodating large groups. This route also serves as a key recreational artery, offering trailheads for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in the surrounding national forest. While suitable for high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles, stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, and side-by-sides (SxSs) will have an effortless time navigating the occasional rocky sections. Beautiful views of nearby peaks like Irish Mine Hill and Bison Mountain make this an exceptionally scenic drive during the summer and fall.
