Trail Overview

Lion Gulch is a harder ATV trail in the Pipestone OHV system that connects with WP231 and is accessed off of Delmoe Lake Road from the Homestake Trailhead. It's unmarked at the entrances but does have a wooden bridge over a stream that is only wide enough for ATVs and dirt bikes. The trail is primitive and has some harder rock sections. It goes through muddy bogs and has a log across the trail that would need to be cut for an ATV. It goes downhill from north to south on a steep and loose descent that would be very technical for an ATV and has some sections with loose football-sized rocks in the trail, or embedded boulders. The trail passes through small sections of private property, so please be respectful.

About 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up this trail (heading north) there are two big mud holes. The first one is a problem (see pic). I had to winch out. The second one was okay if you hit it with speed. There are stretches of moderate-steep climbs, lots of rocks of varying sizes (up to quite large), downed trees and parts thereof, etc. THIS is NOT a beginner or even intermediate-friendly trail, even when dry. Once you get past the mud and get up close to the end, there is a small dilapidated bridge you get to drive over. It looks sketchy but held up my heavy Sportsman 850 just fine. Do NOT try to bring anything bigger than a 50" machine on this trail. And honestly I'm not sure if a RZR Trail will make it due to lack of ground clearance. And you better have a winch and other gear (such as a tree strap, extensions, soft shackles, etc) or you'll be in trouble. They are rating this a 6/10... I would call it a 7/10.
