Lava Mountain Loop is a scenic and moderately challenging 26-mile off-road trail near Clancy and Rimini, Montana, offering an entertaining forest route for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs. Running at elevations ranging from 4,863 to 7,412 feet, this trail can be driven as a complete loop or as a point-to-point connector between the historic mountain towns of Boulder, Clancy, and Rimini. While the access road from Clancy tends to be heavily rutted and less scenic, the loop itself rewards drivers with tight tree clearances, challenging fallen log obstacles, and a diverse timber landscape. A short but technical boulder section tests driver skill and vehicle articulation, though multiple line choices and ample winching trees are available to assist with recovery.
Preparation is key on this remote route, particularly during the early season when deep snow drifts, slick mud holes, and fallen trees frequently block the path. Travelers should carry a chainsaw and an axe to clear deadfall, and a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle with at least one winch is highly recommended. The trail climbs over 3,300 feet of cumulative elevation gain, requiring careful tire placement on off-camber sections and through the rocky boulder fields. Summer and early autumn provide the best conditions for exploring this section of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest when the high-country paths are mostly clear of winter snow.
