Hawkins Lakes

Hawkins Lakes/Pete Creek, also known as FS 338/5910, climbs high into the farthest northwest regions of Montana in the Purcell Mountains. The route accesses Hawkins Lakes, Burke Lake, Northwest Peak Lookout, Midge Creek, and Garver Mountain Trailhead. There are multiple dispersed camping locations along the road and near trailheads. This area has Deer, Elk, Mountain Lion, and several collared Grizzly Bears relocated to the area due to the remote nature. The route intermittently has a paved roadway surface that has deteriorated over time and there are many corrugations and potholes. There is Verizon cell phone coverage at Hawkins lakes, but there are no vault toilets, potable water, or other amenities available. The route may have seasonal closures and is subject to some roadway tree deadfall.
