Trail Overview

Cattle Drive to Bear Gulch is a scenic 12-mile offroad trail near Boulder, Montana, that offers a moderate, family-friendly climb from the Boulder River valley into the high elevations of the Deerlodge National Forest. Ideal for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes, this route provides stunning mountain vistas and excellent opportunities to spot local wildlife like deer, elk, and bears. Starting at the intersection of Montana Highway 69 and Cattle Drive Road, the route follows the Boulder River before passing beneath Interstate 15. From there, travelers transition onto the Berry Meadows Trail as they wind into Galena Gulch, ultimately gaining over 2,300 feet of elevation to top out at just above 7,250 feet. Rated a 3 out of 10, the trail is generally straightforward but presents seasonal challenges such as deep mud after heavy rainfall and lingering snowbanks in the early spring. Offroaders should be prepared for minor trail erosion and should pack recovery gear, including a saw, tow straps, and a snatch block, to clear fallen trees or branches that frequently block the path. While the trail crosses sections of private property, public access is permitted as long as travelers remain strictly on the designated trail. The surrounding national forest lands offer opportunities for dispersed camping and further backcountry exploration.
