Trail Overview

Blacktail Point Road is identified as Forest Road #13214 in the Bitterroot National Forest. This road is lightly traveled and is likely to appeal to off-roaders who enjoy exploring the backcountry to "get away from it all". The tread is a single lane dirt and rock surface, but there are abundant pull-outs to pass oncoming traffic, even though it is unlikely to occur. There are some spectacular views of the Bitterroot Mountains, most notably Trapper Peak, which is still snow-capped in August. This area has healthy populations of mule deer and elk, and sightings are frequent from this road.

Difficulty

There are some ruts that require high clearance, and some skill in straddling ruts is useful on this road. There is also quite a bit of vegetation overgrown into the road that might be a little difficult for larger vehicles.
