Trail Overview

Fun switchback dirt trail that ends at a small parking area with a nice overlook. This is where the Bass Overlook Hiking trail #392 starts and is part of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Bass Overlook Trailhead has adequate parking for both cars and trailers. The overlook is a short walk from the parking area and facilities include 2 picnic tables and a firefighter memorial. There are also a few rock formations at the viewpoint to explore. A third of the way up there is a forest service gate that closes seasonally on 10/14 and opens on 5/16. There are a few sections of this trail where aspens are present, making it a beautiful drive in early fall when the leaves are beginning to change. There are a few blind curves along the switchbacks, drive with care. In the dry summer months, high clearance 2wd and AWD should have no issues on this trail. Closed in Winter. The lower third of this trail is open year-round and provides access to the popular Bass Creek Hiking trail. The Charles Waters Campground is next to the Bass Creek Hiking Trailhead and is open 5/2 to 11/30. This is a paid campground with picnic tables, metal fire rings, and pit toilets.
