Trail Overview

Piney Ridge is an easy-going, scenic gravel route perfect for beginners, families, and those looking for a relaxed drive through the Mark Twain National Forest. Stretching just over five miles, this wide, well-maintained two-lane road is highly accessible, requiring only a standard two-wheel-drive vehicle, though it is equally suited for four-wheel-drive rigs and SxSs. Starting from Stallion Bluff Road at Forest Road 178, the trail features fresh gravel in several sections, gentle elevation changes ranging from 1,290 feet to nearly 1,475 feet, and a very mild grade. The route winds through dense forest, offering an approachable overland experience with minimal obstacles, making it an excellent warm-up or transit road. Along the eastern border of the route lies the pristine Piney Creek Wilderness, providing access to multiple trailheads for hiking and horseback riding. Dispersed camping areas are available near these trailheads for those wishing to extend their stay in the Missouri backcountry. As the trail travels west toward State Highway 39, it passes through segments of private property, so staying on the designated road is essential. Whether used as a scenic connection between regional routes or as a gateway to wilderness recreation, this trail offers a smooth and reliable drive for any vehicle.
