Trail Overview

This is a Mark Twain National Forest Scenic Byway Drive between Highway 112 and 86 in southwest Missouri near Roaring River State Park and Eagle Rock, Missouri. Following NF Road 197 or FR 2275, it is an 8-mile east-west route that consists of well-maintained gravel roads that can be traveled by any vehicle. The road is gravel the whole way except for the last 150 yards, which turns into pavement before exiting the Mark Twain National Forest. You'll have some gorgeous views of the Ozarks and many recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, including scenic overlooks, hiking, picnic areas, camping/staging areas, and designated trails for OHV, SxS, four-wheelers, and dirt bikes. It is a great place to experience all four seasons. In the summertime, it consists of dense, lush hardwood forests with limited views of the surrounding landscape. In late fall and winter, the clear trees allow incredible views of the surrounding rugged landscape. In spring, after heavy rains, natural springs and waterfalls can be viewed right off the road. There are many side roads to explore that branch off this route, one being the Sugar Camp Loop. (Be aware that the loop requires high-clearance 4x4 to complete.) Most of this route does not have cell reception, and it is recommended you download your offline maps ahead of time and have proper signaling devices if setting off on many of the more technical spur roads and trails.

Well maintained gravel road. Pretty well any type of vehicle would be able to traverse this road. Numeros off shoots leading to camp areas, some very beautiful views as well. Some of the off shoots had very large middle holes and certainly present a fun challenge for the right kind of vehicle. This trail is worth a drive of you are content with a nice windy drive through the mountains with little to no challenges.
