Trail Overview

Wanless Road is considered one of the more scenic routes within the Superior National Forest. This long, well-maintained gravel trail winds through dense woodland. It passes several picturesque lakes, including Dumbbell, Hogback, Charity, Elixir, Homestead, Scott, Divide, and Delay Lake, as well as several rivers. The surface is generally smooth, with only minor corrugation on the inside edges of some corners. Numerous side trails branch off from the main route, though many have been intentionally closed off using fallen trees or large boulders. Local residents regularly use the road, so oncoming traffic should be expected. Along the trail, two rustic campsites are available--one located near Isabella Lake, offering a peaceful setting with a vault toilet and lake access, and another, smaller but more frequently used campsite at the opposite end of the route. Additionally, two free dispersed campsites with fire rings can be found about halfway along the trail beside a lake. Despite these camping opportunities, the trail lacks services such as trash disposal and potable water, and cell phone coverage may be limited or nonexistent.
