Trail Overview

This trail is designed for extreme rock crawling and is not recommended for stock or lightly modified vehicles. Along the route, you'll encounter massive boulders, some reaching up to 5 feet tall, requiring careful line selection, high ground clearance, and excellent articulation. Body armor and full undercarriage protection, including skids and sliders, are highly recommended. Adding to the challenge, many of the rocks are covered in moss, making traction unpredictable and increasing the risk of slipping off your line. This trail runs adjacent to Skull Road, a significantly easier path.

Difficulty

This is an expert-level trail built for seasoned rock crawlers. Massive boulders, up to five feet tall, dominate the terrain and demand aggressive builds with oversized tires, lockers, and serious ground clearance. Expect slick moss-covered rocks that test your throttle control and patience. This trail is unforgiving--body damage is likely without full armor and underbody protection. If you're not fully equipped and ready to crawl, this isn't your line.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
