Trail Overview

The Paul Bunyan Southern Single Track Bypass is an approachable and scenic 1.8-mile dirt bike trail designed for riders looking to quickly bypass the southern forest roads and access deeper single-track networks east of State Highway 64. Starting near the Stompin' Grounds Campground trail lot, this narrow path winds through a peaceful landscape dotted with multiple picturesque lakes and ponds. With a technical rating of 3, the route is mostly mellow but features minor challenges including sandy patches, rocky sections, exposed roots, and small elevation changes with roughly 300 feet of cumulative climbing. It serves as an efficient connector that transitions riders from the campground staging area directly into the heart of the Paul Bunyan State Forest trail system. Riders should prepare for changing trail conditions throughout the season, as the surrounding birch forests frequently drop branches and leaves that can obscure obstacles. Spring and summer rains can create slick roots, deep puddles, and muddy ruts, while autumn brings dense leaf cover that hides rocks and dips, requiring extra caution. Because the trail runs through active wildlife habitat, carrying bear spray is recommended due to occasional black bear sightings in the area. Dispersed camping is widely available throughout the surrounding state forest for those looking to extend their stay beyond the amenities at the campground.

Some ruts are getting pretty deep. This trail was the least overgrown out of the other single track trails I saw on the south end of the park. Tons of mosquitoes
