Trail Overview
This trail features a steep hill climb that demands both driver focus and capable equipment. Traction can be a major challenge, especially in wet or loose conditions, and vehicles with a higher center of gravity may feel unstable on the ascent. Tire quality and air pressure play a big role in maintaining grip throughout the climb. Near the top of the hill, there is a roughly 12-inch-tall rock embedded in the trail surface that can unsettle your suspension. If you hit it at the wrong angle or with too much speed, it may cause a bounce that could result in a loss of traction, or worse, a rollover. Caution is highly advised.
Difficulty
This is a high-intermediate to advanced-level climb due to its steepness and potential hazards near the top. While it doesn't feature long technical sections, the hill's pitch combined with loose surface conditions makes maintaining traction a challenge, especially for rigs with higher centers of gravity or worn tires. The embedded rock near the summit acts as a natural trip point, increasing the risk of bounce or instability. This obstacle demands careful throttle control and proper line choice. Drivers should be confident in hill starts, capable of recovery, and prepared for a potential rollback scenario. Not recommended for beginners.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
