Trail Overview

Greenwood Lake Road (FS 309) is accessed from the paved Gunflint Trail and begins with a series of steep ascents and descents. Shortly after entering the trail, it crosses a small bridge, and as of July 2025, maintenance work was being carried out along portions of the route. An ATV trail branches off near the beginning, but the main route continues as a relatively well-maintained, wide gravel road. The surface is mostly in good condition, though there are sections with bumps and mild corrugation. The trail winds through dense forest and passes through an active logging area. Numerous side trails branch off along the way, but only a few residences are located along this route. The trail leads to a lake with a public water access point, but travel beyond this point is restricted, as a sign marks the end of public road access. There are no formal campsites along this trail, and it lacks basic amenities such as trash disposal and potable water. Cell phone service may be unreliable or unavailable.
