Trail Overview

This trail is a well-maintained mix of gravel and dirt that winds its way through a forest dominated by pine and birch. In several sections, the trees have been cleared aggressively, leaving the surrounding area heavily disturbed and exposing the forest floor. The trail eventually arrives at a designated campsite that includes a small boat launch suitable for hand-carried craft, as well as a picnic area. Facilities at the campsite include hand-pumped water, pit toilets, and a designated area for trash disposal. Several large campsites are available, and most are stocked with cut logs for firewood. Some of the campsites offer direct access to the lake. Motorized recreation, such as ATVs, is not permitted, and there are no electrical hookups at any of the sites. Cadotte Lake, spanning 294 acres, is accessible from the area and is renowned for its fishing opportunities, particularly for yellow perch and walleye. This trail and its destination offer a serene setting, ideal for low-impact camping and paddling.

History

Long before recreational camping, this region was part of traditional Ojibwe and Cree territories. It sits on ancestral waterways and seasonal travel routes that have been used for generations to hunt, fish, and trap. The campground shares its name--Cadotte--with French-Metis fur trader Michel Cadotte (1764-1837), who was influential in regional intertribal and European trade.
