Trail Overview
This is a tight, technical trail designed for experienced drivers and well-equipped vehicles. The route features a continuous series of small hills and undulating terrain where getting high-centered is a real possibility if you're lacking in ground clearance. Scattered throughout the trail are rock obstacles, some reaching up to two feet in height, requiring good suspension flex and careful tire placement. Several areas are off-camber, adding an extra layer of challenge and demanding steady throttle control to maintain stability. In addition, the trail weaves between tightly spaced trees, making it a tight squeeze for full-size rigs. This is not a casual ride--it's a slow, calculated trail that tests your rig's articulation and your ability to navigate narrow, uneven terrain. Proper spotting and underbody protection are highly recommended.
Difficulty
This is a narrow, technical trail that offers little room for error--and absolutely no room for passing. It's strictly one vehicle wide from start to finish, so once you're in, you're committed. Expect a mix of small rolling hills that can easily leave lower rigs high-centered, along with off-camber sections that require strong suspension flex and confident driving. Rock obstacles up to two feet tall demand careful tire placement, and the tight tree-lined corridors make maneuvering challenging, especially for wider rigs.
History
The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
