Trail Overview
This trail is wide enough for two vehicles and has a well-maintained gravel surface. It follows a nearly straight course through a forested landscape, offering a scenic and quiet drive. The route leads to the Wapiti and Thief Lake Wildlife Management Areas, making it a useful access road for visitors to those locations. Drivers should be cautious of potentially slippery spots, particularly after rain, and remain alert for local traffic that may be using the same road. Deer are common in the area, and drainage ditches run alongside the road, so care should be taken when passing through. The trail does not offer any dispersed or formal campsites and has no amenities such as trash disposal or a water supply. Cell phone service may be limited along the route, so planning ahead is recommended for those traveling this way.

This forest trail is well-maintained and used daily by residents and adventurers. The route is wide and clear of debris, with established tread and minimal overgrowth, making it ideal for a smooth and scenic drive. Note that the first 1.5 miles on the western side are not accessible by OHVs.
History
Thief Lake WMA encompasses a mix of marshes, forests, brushlands, and prairie. The area is home to over 232 bird species, including five species of grebes, American Bittern, Black-crowned Night-Heron, and Sandhill Crane. Additionally, the WMA hosts one of Minnesota's two herds of elk. Other wildlife species present include white-tailed deer, moose, bear, and various furbearers. The Wapiti WMA is part of the broader Beltrami Island State Forest, characterized by its diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and peat bogs. These habitats support a variety of wildlife species, including elk (also known as wapiti), which are native to the area. The presence of elk is significant, as they were historically abundant in Minnesota but were extirpated from the state in the late 1800s.
