Skyline Loop

Skyline Loop is an easy, scenic 16.8-mile off-road trail in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that is perfect for beginner drivers and families looking to experience the region's stunning autumn foliage. Starting off Michigan State Highway 123 near Tahquamenon Falls State Park, this beginner-friendly loop combines Camp 7 Road, Charcoal Grade Road, and the Skyline Truck Trail into a cohesive and enjoyable driving route. The terrain consists of sandy and unpaved dirt surfaces, winding through dense northern hardwood forests that come alive with vibrant colors during the fall. With a gentle elevation range between 720 and 834 feet and a mild elevation gain of only 166 feet, this route offers a relaxed pace that can be completed in under two hours. While the trail is rated a 2 out of 10 and is generally accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dual-sport motorcycles, changing weather can quickly alter the driving experience. In dry conditions, the sandy roads are straightforward to navigate, but wet weather can create deep puddles, muddy ruts, and slippery sections that require more careful wheel placement and traction control. There are no major obstacles or technical crawling sections, making it a great option for stock utility vehicles looking to explore the wilder side of the Tahquamenon River area. Since the route traverses remote state forest land, visitors should display the appropriate Michigan Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) license and trail permit, and be prepared for limited cellular reception along the loop.
