Trail Overview

License Plate Required! No. 4 Trail is a fun and scenic "out and back" trail located within the Cadillac Forest Management Unit. Starting the trail is a bumpy dirt section with thick forest along both edges. A cool fact about this trail is that the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST), or North Country Trail for short, runs through the beginning portion of it. If you aren't familiar with the NCNST, the short version is that it's a 4800-mile-long hiking trail that spans 8 states in the northern US. As you continue along, the trail weaves and flows before opening up with 360 degree views of a very open, clear-cut section of the forest. The trail continues back into the forest with towering pine trees that are a gorgeous sight to see. Shortly after, the track gets darker as the forest gets thicker. This is where the lush plant life and vegetation can be found. The end of the trail finishes at a turnaround loop just below US HWY-131. This trail consists of a fair amount of sand, but is also mixed with a lot of dirt. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Please use caution and come prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. Regardless of the conditions, this is an awesome trail with several other great trails nearby!
