Trail Overview
NFS 6040 is a gorgeous and easy through-trail located within the Manistee National Forest, near Big Star Lake. Starting from the east end heading west, you'll sweep around a few sandy berms before entering the dense forest with towering Red Pines. As you traverse the trail, trudging through mud holes, you'll find yourself navigating through some narrow gaps between trees in a couple of sections. Most of the trail is comprised of dirt and sand. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come prepared. Most of this trail is only wide enough for one vehicle, with limited places to pass. Regardless of the conditions, this is a wonderful trail that leads to several other great nearby trails!
