NFS 5098

Trail Overview

NFS 5098 is a fun, cruising, bidirectional trail located within the Manistee National Forest. Positioned just southeast of Baldwin, it's a very accessible, easy trail. Starting from the north end, you'll begin on a smooth gravel track with magnificent Red Pine Trees. As you navigate along the trail, it transitions from a smooth gravel surface to a dirt/sand consistency. The south end of the trail finishes off with a much deeper/thicker sand surface that gets choppy on a slight hill. This is worth noting for low clearance vehicles and heavy rigs. Lowering your tire pressure in conditions like this will gain more traction. Also, taking this trail from the north to the south will be easier with the deeper section of sand since you'll be traveling downhill and have gravity on your side. Coming up the sandy section will be more difficult. Logging operations do take place here, so please use caution. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle, with limited places to pass. This is not a difficult trail at all, but it still contains a great amount of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. The south end of the trail finishes at E 18 Mile Road, on the border between Lake & Newaygo Counties. Regardless of the conditions, this is a fantastic trail! PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
