Trail Overview
L'Anse Reservation Spur is a state owned/ locally maintained, Level-2/ Level-3 forest access route with a surface composition of sand, dirt, gravel, and native material (ex: leaves, pine needles, pine cones, sticks, branches). This route spurs off of Silver Falls Road, traverses through the Baraga Forest management land of the Huron Mountain Range, and ends at the Third Lake Drive junction.
Difficulty
Gravel, dirt, and sand route typically unmaintained after rain or snow that may give rise to water crossings < 12” and obstacles such as tree/ tree branches and potential overflow from the Silver River.
History
Established under the Chippewa Treaty of 1854, the L'Anse Indian Reservation in Baraga County is the oldest and largest Native American reservation in Michigan. It spans roughly 54,000 acres along Keweenaw Bay and serves as the primary home of the federally recognized Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC), descendants of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians.
