FS 9861

Trail Overview

FS 9861 is a short, simple, and scenic "out-and-back" trail within the Manistee National Forest. Located near Gilbert Lake & East Harrison Road, this trail is easily accessible. Starting out, you'll begin on a gravel/sandy two-track along a row of elegant pine trees. The trail makes its descent towards Gilbert Lake, which can contain a lot of water runoff across the track. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! The trail finishes in a large parking space/turn-around loop with plenty of space to park, giving non-motorized access to hike down to the shore of the lake and stretch your legs, or just simply to loop around to head back out of the trail. No motorized vehicles are permitted beyond the parking area/turn-around loop. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle, with limited places to pass. This is not a difficult trail, and regardless of the length or conditions, it's a great route to explore with a lot of beautiful scenery to be had!
