Trail Overview
8 Trail is an out-and-back trail with some accessible side trails that can be taken. The trail starts in a heavily wooded forest section on a bumpy, muddy dirt road. As you continue down the trail, you'll weave through an area of the forest that has been harvested and since replanted. This is a special thing to see. From there, you'll continue weaving through the forest where it'll turn into a gorgeous section of dense small birch trees. Finally, you'll descend in elevation to the overlook. This is a wonderful place to stop for lunch or finish your day. You'll be greeted by a high sandy bluff overlooking a bend in the Manistee River. This spot is also a dispersed campsite that can accommodate a small-sized group (roughly 5ish vehicles can park and camp here). If you plan on camping off this trail, please tread lightly and seek more information at the local DNR Office/Ranger Station before camping here. The North Country Hiking Trail intersects the overlook at the end of this trail. If you're unfamiliar with this hiking trail, it's worth looking up. If you're daring enough, venture down to the riverbank and cast a line out for an afternoon of fishing. The Manistee River is an excellent place to fish. Just remember, the sandy climb back to the top is very steep and exhausting. All in all, this is a gorgeous trail that is a lot of fun. Make it a weekend campsite spot or use it as an out-and-back trail during a trail ride. This trail surely won't disappoint!
