Trail Overview

Winding between dense hardwood and pine forests, open meadows, and occasional lowland marshes, the trail provides scenic variety and excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings. The route also crosses several smaller spur trails and seasonal roads like ASG Trail and Side Winder. The trail surface consists mainly of compacted gravel and deep sand. Dry summer conditions can lead to loose, powdery sand in some stretches, particularly in open clearings. In spring or after heavy rain, sections may become soft or muddy, though still passable with off-road capable vehicles. There are areas where you can dispersed camp as well. Be prepared with offline maps due to the spotty cell coverage.

Difficulty

The trail has a gravel and sand base and is generally wide enough for two vehicles. It offers an easy, straightforward drive with no notable obstacles.

History

The origins of the Allegan State Game Area trace back to the late 1930s, when lands were acquired under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration’s submarginal land program to create the Allegan State Forest. This area later evolved into what is now the Game Area. The modern Game Area was officially established in 1964, when the Michigan DNR merged three units: the Allegan State Forest, the Swan Creek Wildlife Experiment Station, and the Fennville State Game Area, forming a consolidated 50,656-acre public conservation and recreation unit.

This trail is in great condition. Very smooth for a dirt road with the exception of a couple dried water holes that don't constitute an obstacle at all. This trail is currently passable by any street vehicle.
