Trail Overview
The Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Trail offers an easy, scenic 19.7-mile drive perfect for families, beginners, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore Louisiana's unique bayou landscape. Running along the eastern bank of the Atchafalaya River and the western boundary of the Sherburne WMA, this gravel and dirt road is accessible year-round and accommodates most standard vehicles, though four-wheel-drive is recommended during wet conditions. The route is exceptionally flat, with elevation ranging between 20 and 46 feet, resulting in just 16 feet of total gain and 22 feet of loss. This low-difficulty trail provides access to diverse recreational opportunities, including hiking trails, hunting areas, designated ATV and SxS trails, shooting ranges, and primitive camping sites, making it an excellent hub for multi-day outdoor adventures.
Travelers should remain alert for minor obstacles such as downed trees or low, waterlogged sections after heavy rain, which can temporarily impact passage. To access the trail, drivers can use Interstate 10 at the Whiskey Bay Exit (127) on the south end or Highway 190 at Junction 975 near Krotz Springs on the north. For those visiting the northern section, local stops in Krotz Springs offer authentic regional food, where travelers can sample famous Louisiana specialties like cracklins and boudin at Billy's Diner or Kartchner's Grocery. Whether embarking on a day of fishing, scouting for wildlife, or simply enjoying a peaceful drive along the river, this trail serves as a gateway to the heart of the Atchafalaya Basin.
