Trail Overview
Wix Hollow Road is a scenic and slightly more dynamic segment of the Macon County Tour that briefly crosses into the state of Kentucky. The route features a mixed surface of dirt and gravel, offering a relaxed drive with a bit more character than a standard, maintained county road. The surrounding landscape includes numerous waterfront stretches, creating inviting areas to pause, enjoy the scenery, or set up a simple picnic along the water's edge. The most notable feature of this road is a paved water crossing. Under normal conditions, the crossing is straightforward, but during periods of high water, it can become treacherous due to increased flow going over a significant drop-off beyond the slab. The area is also prone to flooding. Drivers should carefully assess water levels before attempting the crossing, especially after heavy rain. Outside of this feature, the terrain remains generally manageable, with no sustained technical sections. As always, remain on the designated roadway and use caution when recreating near moving water.
Difficulty
Wix Hollow Road is rated a 2 due to the presence of a paved water crossing that can introduce risk depending on water levels. While the surface of the trail is primarily gravel and dirt without significant ruts or large obstacles, the crossing itself requires attention to depth, current, and the drop-off beyond the slab during high water conditions. Outside of this feature, the road does not present sustained technical terrain. The overall experience aligns with a dirt or rocky road where shallow water crossings and small obstacles may be encountered, making it suitable for most 4WD and high-clearance 2WD vehicles in normal conditions, with increased caution advised after heavy rainfall.
