Trail Overview

Cowen Creek offers an exciting, technical challenge for experienced offroaders looking to test their high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles against rugged terrain. Spanning approximately 2.26 miles near Zachariah, Kentucky, this trail delivers scenic beauty as it winds through a rocky creek bed filled with mud holes and demanding obstacles. Drivers must navigate a steep descent with over 600 feet of elevation loss down to an elevation of around 750 feet, where the trail meets the water. The core challenge of this run centers around climbing two distinct waterfalls that demand careful tire placement and adequate suspension flex. Rated as a technical 7, this route features large rocks, major ledges, and deep mud holes that make body damage a distinct possibility without proper clearance and armor. High-clearance four-wheel-drive rigs and built SxSs with lockers are highly recommended to tackle the slick rock obstacles and water crossings safely. Due to the creek-bottom nature of the trail, water levels and mud consistency can fluctuate significantly with local rainfall, making self-recovery gear like a winch essential. Navigating this trail provides a classic Daniel Boone National Forest backwoods experience, ending near Walker Creek Road.

We came in from the south off KAT11. The lower portion is open up to the abandoned cabin and barn, which are cool to checkout. After the “cabin loop” (marked by adventure tour signs) the trail is permanently closed.

Locked gate. Was told by a lady that they were filming something and she told us to move along because of the noise of our jeeps. Not sure if this is permanently closed or just because they are filming.
