Trail Overview

This route will take you through some of the beautiful and unique landscapes of central Kansas, combining scenic drives with opportunities to explore natural and historical sites. It consists primarily of gravel roads, with a few being dirt and low-maintenance, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather. You will pass by Coronado Heights Castle, Hoglund dugout, Kanopolis Lake State Park, Mushroom State Park, and the Farris Caves. Please note that this route includes short paved segments on Kansas State Highways 140 and 141.

Difficulty

Overall, this route is primarily gravel roads with a few being dirt mix. Rains can cause roadways be muddy and have ruts.

History

Coronado Heights Castle, a historic area where it's believed that Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his men viewed the prairie from this lookout point 300 feet above the valley floor on their search for the Seven Cities of Gold. Faris Caves: Dating back to the 1880s. Kanoplis State Park: Great hiking, fishing, and Caves; worth exploring.

The segment on 7th from Smokey Valley to K-4 is gated and locked. Rest of trail was good. Not a level 2 trail though. All very good gravel roads.
