Trail Overview
SFR 743/743A offers a scenic and moderately challenging descent through the dense canopy of the Shawnee National Forest, making it an excellent short adventure for offroaders looking to test their traction. Branching off Natural Bridge Road (SFR 750) near the Pomona Natural Bridge, this 1.4-mile trail starts on a relatively tame gravel surface before transitioning into natural dirt as it winds down the hilltop. Drivers will navigate an elevation loss of nearly 290 feet, dropping from a maximum elevation of 621 feet down to 364 feet. Along the upper sections, small water collections and minor ruts begin to test vehicle clearance, building anticipation before reaching the key fork where the 743A spur begins.
As the route descends further toward the creek bottoms, the terrain becomes increasingly rutted, muddy, and off-camber, demanding high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles or capable SxSs. Water erosion has carved uneven dirt mounds and deep channels along the steeper slopes, which can become slick and highly challenging during wet seasons. The trail ultimately guides travelers into the lush bottoms near a flowing creek, before opening up into a power line clearing that marks the final stretch of the tree line. Because fallen trees are common in this heavily forested area, carrying a chainsaw or trimming tool is highly recommended to clear any path obstructions.
Difficulty
Road slowly transforms from gravel to dirt, level maintained road to an uneven inconsistent downward grade. Trail includes ruts, mud, dirt, dirt mounds you have to climb over on the hills. It's a fun little adventure to get your tires dirty and thrill your inner offroader.
