Trail Overview

This starts off as an access improved dirt road. It quickly climbs in elevation with multiple switch backs. You then pass through a closed cattle gate and begin the trail. This is high clearance 4x4 with creek crossings, and tree roots. The best and prettiest time to go is at the end of spring and beginning of summer. You can end this route by dropping into Silver City for a beer and burger.

Difficulty

You will run into mud due to the water reserve for cattle in the area and multiple creeks. Stay on the trail and do not go around the small obstacles. There are no bi-passes. Multiple rocks and roots create the only real obstacles if you stay on Whiskey Mtn Road.

History

There is a lot of history in the butte area including Claude Dallas who had his up the mtns for a long time after shooting and killing the Law Enforcement officer in that area. The ghost town of silver city is a must to check out and most of the building are still in use.

This is more a road than a trail. It’s not a 4 rating by any means. As long as it’s dry enough, any crossover SUV can handle it. At the very top there was still snow that was not passable with our little Suzuki Sidekick on 31” tires but a larger vehicle would have had no issue.

Was nice and dry on the way up from the main road, once you get up to the top of the first elevation gain there's frozen snow, it's very slick. that turns into frozen ruts eventually when you cross the creek and start to climb again the trail comes to a spot someone had gotten stuck in the snow and couldn't go anymore. with only being on 31's breaking trail in icy snow wouldn't work for me. on the trail snow was hard and frozen off the trail snow was frozen but still soft enough to sink into. when I turned around I got stuck and had to recover myself. beautiful country out there can't wait to do it all when it thaws a bit.

Trail is fine, but you can't make it to Silver City this way anymore, blocked by private property on all sides as soon as you get to the end. You'll have to backtrack all the way to Slack Mountain Trail if you want to go anywhere other than an out and back.
