Trail Overview

A scenic two-track that goes from Idaho City down to Grimes Creek Road. The road can be rutted and rocky in the spring with snow remaining, but typically in good shape by late June or July. The road ascends to about 6,000 feet and parallels Highway 21. The route is approximately 16 miles one way.

Mostly dry. Recently maintained. I pulled an off-road trailer up with no problem.

This isn’t a trail anymore, they’re widened it into a road for logging. It’s a 1/10 at best.

OnX calls it a 4, I’d call It a 2. You don’t need 4wd to do this trail. There were some pretty views and it’s mostly shaded the whole way. I didn’t see any low hanging branches. There were a few offshoots that were a little more challenging here and there and lots of dispersed camping spots. We took this trail from HI21 until it meets with Idaho city to horseshoe bend road (IC2HSBR). 32.2 miles covered with a few pit stops. Had a cell signal almost the whole trail. The IC2HSBR is a well maintained dirt road. I would assume about an hour from there to Idaho city. There were few spot or mud but it wasn’t muddy. Big takeaway was, it would be a fun trail to hit on a weekend, lunch in the middle, hang a right at the IC2HSBR and head down to Idaho city.

Trail was 95% dry with small water runoffs from the snow. No obstructions or closed roads from Grimes Creek to Idaho City. Recommend 4x4 vehicle, ATV or motorcycle.

First 4 miles or so of the trail are pretty easy, some ruts from water run off but nothing crazy, any shaded corner had anywhere from 1-8 inches of snow/ ice. As you gain elevation there is more and more snow obviously so be careful and come prepared. We turned around out of caution but could be manageable for someone with the right rig and experience. Still very pretty this time of year!

Wow, amazing day with the family. All the way from grimes creek to idaho city, maybe 3 hours we went slow. Did not do any of the side(in and out) shoots. Most were closed for winter. Several good washouts in trail and a few fairly off camber spots i would not want see in very slick conditions, but I never HAD to use my 4WD. First time down this trail definitely going back for camping in the future.

The winter might be different but if you go in the summer months the road is an easy drive with great views. I wouldn’t rate this a 4 but I haven’t been with snow. Any stock 4x4 can do the trail in the summer. I saw a few stock suv’s while we were there. The side trails were gated off and closed when we went but there are a lot of cool camping sites out there. Definitely worth the drive. There are some spots where it gets tight when trying to pass other cars.

The description of this trail is not accurate. There are no level 4 obstacles right now and it is a well-graded road. Very scenic, despite the amount of smoke from the nearby fires. It is essentially a level 1 trail now and could easily be accessible by low-clearance, 2x4 vehicles.

someone listed this as a level 4 trail. I could have taken thw wife's Kia Sonata up it. had the 4x4 group of 5 people looking for a great trail.. this is one is a leisurely drive.
