Trail Overview

This scenic 26.3-mile point-to-point trail is ideal for beginner to intermediate offroaders looking to explore the historic Snake River Plain while taking in views of the iconic Big Southern Butte. Running from Springfield, Idaho, up toward the towering volcanic dome of Big Southern Butte, the route follows a portion of the historic Goodale's Cutoff, an alternate route on the Oregon Trail. The trail climbs from an elevation of 4,507 feet to a peak of 5,539 feet, gaining approximately 1,232 feet of cumulative elevation along a predominantly unpaved surface. Drivers will navigate a mix of dirt, sand, and rough lava rock outcroppings, requiring a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or SxSs to handle the rugged, rutted terrain safely. Because the sharp volcanic lava rock is notorious for puncturing tire sidewalls, carrying a full-size spare and maintaining careful tire placement is highly recommended. The trail offers breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic views across the desert landscape, featuring Middle Butte and East Butte, and on clear days, views extend to the Grand Tetons and the Bitterroot, Lemhi, Lost River, and Bannock ranges. Spring and late fall offer the best riding conditions, as summer temperatures can become extremely high and winter snows block the path. Due to the remote nature of the Snake River Plain and sparse access points, visitors must come fully prepared with ample fuel, water, and emergency supplies before leaving Springfield.

History

This route traverses a section of Goodale's Cutoff, an alternate spur of the Oregon Trail. Pioneered to avoid conflicts and find better grazing, the cutoff left the main trail near Fort Hall, crossed the harsh Snake River Plain north toward the Lost River, and continued west toward Boise.
