Trail Overview
Pole Canyon Road is an easy, beginner-friendly dirt route in southern Idaho near the Black Pine Mountains, ideal for high-clearance all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes looking for a scenic drive. The trail begins near Interstate 84 in Juniper Valley, starting along 9000 South before transitioning into Forest Service Road 70761 as it travels west. It serves as a straightforward connector from the valley into the foothills, climbing gently through rolling desert terrain that eventually gives way to the more rugged, vegetated slopes of the canyon. The initial miles of this unpaved road are wide, well-maintained, and passable for most standard vehicles during dry weather.
As the road climbs further into the canyon, the trail narrows considerably and presents a few minor obstacles. The final stretch features tighter clearances where overgrown brush can cause minor scratches to wider vehicles, alongside several rocky sections that require careful tire placement. Wet weather completely changes the road surface, turning the dirt into slick, clay-like mud that makes four-wheel drive essential and standard two-wheel-drive travel highly discouraged. The area offers great opportunities for dispersed camping, hunting, and accessing nearby hiking trails within the Sawtooth National Forest, though drivers of larger trucks should remain mindful of the tightest sections near the end.
Access Description
Pole Canyon Road is located on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the Sawtooth National Forest. No permits or fees are required to access the road. The route is subject to seasonal closures due to winter snow or muddy conditions, typically from late fall through spring. Standard four-wheel-drive or high-clearance vehicles are recommended for the tight and rocky upper section, while two-wheel-drive vehicles should only attempt the trail in dry conditions.
