Moores Gulch

Moores Gulch is a moderately challenging, 2.77-mile out-and-back trail designed for experienced four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs seeking rugged terrain, historic ruins, and breathtaking alpine vistas in the Sawtooth National Forest. Forking north from the Bear Creek Jeep Trail, this route delivers a demanding climb through a mix of loose rock, steep hillsides, and sharp corners. The initial section right off the main road is the most technical and slow-going, requiring careful wheel placement to navigate over large rocks and occasional fallen timber. As the trail ascends nearly 1,800 feet of elevation, the route levels out slightly but remains a slow, engaging drive, eventually reaching a maximum elevation of 8,947 feet. Beyond the technical challenges, the trail rewards offroaders with access to spectacular mountain peaks, deep valleys, and historical landmarks. Visitors can stop to explore the historic remains of an abandoned mine and its adjacent bunkhouse, or camp in a spacious open meadow perfect for taking in the quiet surroundings. A side trip on foot via the single-track Goat Lake Trail leads to a pristine mountain lake, offering a peaceful spot to relax and cool off. This trail is ideal for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles with experienced drivers, and is generally accessible from late spring through fall depending on high-country snowpack.
