Trail Overview

A challenging and scenic high-elevation singletrack trail that contours the rugged slopes of Big Elk Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the Teton Range and Palisades Reservoir.

Difficulty

This trail is likely to intimidate novice riders, especially this first 50 feet with a moderate loose rock section. The remaining is an intermediate single track switch back through the tree line. On the west side of Elk Mountain the single track has an off camber with west facing exposure. Conservatively rating this section of trail will take around an 1 hour for all the selfies or wildlife photo opportunities, the views are spectacular.

Access Description

The trail is managed by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Palisades Ranger District. No fees or permits are required for day use, but off-road motorcycles must display a valid Idaho OHV registration sticker. The trail is designated for singletrack use only, meaning ATVs, UTVs, and full-size 4x4 vehicles are prohibited. Seasonal trail closures may be in effect during the spring to protect resources and wildlife.
