Trail Overview
Cranky Gulch is a popular trail to access the single-track trails in the St. Joe National Forest south of Wallace, Idaho. It starts off at Moon Pass with a pull-off that riders use as a staging area. There is a gate with a pinch point here and the trail starts on the right after the gate at a trail marker. This is probably one of the first trails that riders use to access the area, so it sees higher use and has some brake bumps. It's a narrow dirt trail with some sections of side-hilling with spots of mild exposure on the slope of a mountainside. The trail is pretty choppy with lots of brake bumps, small rocks, and roots. There aren't any big obstacles, it's just narrow. A couple of times there is a boulder or the root end of a downed tree at the edge of the trail during the narrow spots at handlebar height that you have to watch for and get past. It has a couple of sections of rockier spots, but a lot of the trail is smooth. It's an incline the whole way to connect to the St. Joe Divide North ATV trail, with a couple of steeper sections, but mostly steady, gaining 2,000 feet over 3.3 miles. There are two really mellow switchbacks that are easy.
