Trail Overview

Access to this trail is approximately 10 miles past Avery. The lower section parallels Bird Creek and offers a few nice spots to set up a tent next to the creek. It is also the smooth part of the road. As you start to climb, there are some great views of the valley and adjacent mountains. In the last few miles, the road gets steep with loose rocks and rain ruts covering the road. It also gets more narrow and single-lane in some places. Be sure to stop at the old lookout at Bernier Point about 2 miles from the end of the road.

I give it a 3 just due to the upper portion of the road being very very rough, rocky and rain rutted.

Near the top once you transition onto the north facing slope a little ways after Bernier point and not far at all from the intersection with the trail up to Quarles Peak there were several deep snow drifts blocking the way.
