Trail Overview

Slick Shoals - FS 24 is a 1.5-mile out-and-back route that follows a single-lane forest road with few places to pass. The road surface consists of packed dirt and rocky sections and is not maintained. Passing through heavily forested terrain, the route is rated easy and provides a quiet forest setting despite its increasingly rugged character. Rough and rocky stretches, slight erosion in places, and narrow shelf sections with significant drop-offs require careful attention, particularly where the road narrows. An open area marks the end of the route, providing a convenient turnaround before returning along the same alignment. Access is restricted to highway-legal vehicles only, and the trail is generally open from August 30 through January 9.

There is no gate on this trail and doesn't look like much from the road but turned into a fun little trail. It is a little over grown with mostly briars and other soft plants. I think most of the traffic is locals on 4 wheelers. The last 100 yards the grassy side brush gives way to mountain laurels. It took us about an hour to get to the end and that includes clearing a few 2-4 inch trees that had fallen. This trail in my opinion is little more technical than the trail just north of it. I drove the hole trail in 2wd just to see if I could but low range would be preferable. There are a few technical rocky spots that took me a 2nd attempt in 2wd. There is really no good camping spots but in a pinch the end turnaround spot could be used as a small campsite.
