Trail Overview

Sandy Ford is a short trail that holds an amazing surprise at the end. The road is regularly maintained; the biggest obstacle is a creek crossing that gets up to 18 inches deep but is passable by any truck or SUV. There are dispersed campsites along the route and if you're lucky to find it empty, there is a beachfront spot on the Chattooga River.

Difficulty

Most of the trail is well-maintained gravel with a single shallow water crossing being the most difficult section. It still remains passable for any SUV or truck.

Good section of first half is pavement, when you hit dirt, you will go through a farm residential area with beautiful views. the trail narrows and is gravel and mostly sand ends at a beach that was very making it a bit tricky to turn around as the terrain changes to all sand. Great trail with a watercrossing as well.

Many downed trees from recent ice storm. We cut out as many trees as we could, but still didn’t quite make it to the end. Had to turn around.

Beautiful ride in, albeit dusty. Took the FSR side road on the way out, but it was blocked by a large tree about halfway in.

Water levels were low at the crossing, any vehicle with acceptable clearance would have no problem. Including us, there were 3 groups camping at the beach but it did not feel crowded and we all had our own space. Fall colors were out and beautiful.

Water crossing was easy, maybe 8 - 10 inches deep with a solid bottom. 1 mud hole after a storm, but otherwise pretty easy. I used 4wd in some parts, but 2wd is possible with some good momentum. You might have some problems with fwd, but decent clearance and tires are really all you need.

Great first trail to take the wife and kids. Fun little water crossing and the hidden gem at the end was the beautiful beach area right on the river! There’s no cell signal down there, so be sure to download the offline map.

Road narrows to one lane. 2 cars can squeeze by. one creek crossing. Covered our trip in 2wd Tacoma. Beautiful creek at the end. Be careful of loose sand turning around with 2wd.
