Trail Overview
Trail 14 East is an engaging 1.9-mile off-road route through the Citrus Wildlife Management Area, offering a mix of soft sand play areas and light technical challenges perfect for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs. Running straight west to east, this trail provides an enjoyable trek with minimal elevation change, shifting gently between 90 and 135 feet. Offroaders will find opportunities to test vehicle articulation over uneven terrain and navigate rolling sandy sections that require maintaining steady momentum. The trail intersects with multiple state park roads and adjoining routes, requiring visitors to stay alert to posted signage on surrounding trees to avoid entering restricted zones.
During dry seasons, the sandy surface remains loose and can become quite soft, making four-wheel-drive highly recommended to prevent getting bogged down. Following heavy Florida rains, the character of the trail transforms, filling low-lying sections with shallow water crossings that add an extra layer of adventure to the drive. This route connects seamlessly with other popular paths in the Withlacoochee State Forest, making it an excellent addition to a larger day of exploring the region's diverse pine flatwoods and oak scrub. Stock high-clearance vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes can comfortably navigate the trail, provided they are equipped to handle shifting sand and seasonal water pools.
History
Trail 14 extends further west into Citrus Wildlife Management area with some roads spreading north and south.
Access Description
The trail is located within the Citrus Wildlife Management Area of the Withlacoochee State Forest, which is jointly managed by the Florida Forest Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. All off-road vehicles must be registered and stay strictly on designated forest roads. A daily recreation use fee or a valid state forest annual day-use pass is required for entry. During active hunting seasons, access regulations and safety requirements may change, so checking current wildlife management area schedules is recommended.
