Trail Overview
Point Washington State Forest 1 offers offroaders an easy but engaging journey through scenic pine flatwoods, making it a perfect adventure for those looking to experience Florida's unique coastal ecosystems. Spanning roughly 9 miles of flat terrain with minimal elevation changes, this trail primarily consists of unpaved, single-vehicle-wide sandy roads that wind through the state forest near Santa Rosa Beach. Drivers can expect a technical rating of 3, largely due to sections of deep, loose sand and occasional deep mud holes that can accumulate after rainfall. Four-wheel drive with decent ground clearance is highly recommended to easily navigate these soft sand sections and avoid getting bogged down. The route features beautiful views of towering longleaf pines, saw palmettos, and wetland areas typical of the Gulf Coast region.
Since signage throughout the forest can be inconsistent, offroaders should stay alert for trail markings and potential closures while navigating. The area is highly accessible year-round, though summer rains can significantly increase the depth of the mud holes, adding a bit more challenge to the route. Excellent cell service is available across almost the entire trail, providing an extra layer of safety. For those looking to extend their stay, the state forest offers dispersed camping options alongside two reservation-only campgrounds, allowing visitors to camp right under the stars. Conveniently located just south of U.S. Highway 98, this trail serves as a quick escape into nature, situated only minutes away from the vibrant coastal communities of Seagrove Beach and Seaside.
