Trail Overview

Loop Road, also known as County Road 94, is the most beautiful dirt road you can drive in the area without pulling a permit. The trail starts and ends at US 41 in the southern part of the Big Cypress National Preserve. The Loop Road takes you through open prairies, stands of Bald Cypress, and Slash Pine to the Gator Hook Trailhead and several other beautiful areas. The canal next to the trail provides the opportunity for observation of alligators and wading birds along the way. The road conditions are a mixture of packed sand, loose sand, and some deep holes that can turn into 2 feet deep mud holes after rainy days. The road is always wide enough for two vehicles to pass. 4WD and high clearance are recommended. All vehicles must be street-legal. The freshwaters of the Big Cypress Swamp, essential to the health of the neighboring Everglades, support the rich marine estuaries along Florida's southwest coast. Conserving over 729,000 acres of this vast swamp, Big Cypress National Preserve contains a mixture of tropical and temperate plant communities that are home to diverse wildlife, including the Endangered Florida panther.

This trail was surprisingly beautiful lined either cypress and slash pines. Barely enough room for two cars to pass but manageable. Good for bird watchers. Full loop in and out to 41. Trail was in fairly good shape and I’m guessing was recently graded and filled in with packed sand/limestone. Still has minor pot holes. Can be done in 2WD though not recommended. Looks like could be muddy and slippery when wet.

Really easy trail that you don’t need 4x4 to drive. We entered from the west entrance and found some holes in the first two miles, but those ended and then it was just a gravel road. Plenty of places to stop and look for animals. Saw a handful of gators, and likely drove past a lot more we didn’t see.

Very easy trail and plenty of alligators to see. Not difficult at all, you don't need a 4X4. Large potholes towards the middle and end of the trail. Good trail to test your vehicle capabilities

Lots of potholes. Some parts muddy. Lots of fun with a high clearance vehicle. Not very good right now for regular low clearance vehicles.
