Trail Overview
Beginning immediately off the paved highway, X Road welcomes explorers with a massive, highly convenient dirt staging area featuring prominent informational kiosks. Capable of easily accommodating over 20 vehicles and large trailers, this initial parking zone is a bustling hub frequently utilized by horseback riders, dirt bikers, and side-by-side enthusiasts as a daytime basecamp. The 6.0-mile dirt track is generally wide enough to allow two vehicles to pass comfortably as it stretches across the open desert scrub. Throughout the journey, travelers are treated to sweeping, continuous 360-degree views featuring the dramatic, towering Bookcliffs, the expansive valley below, and striking mountain ranges far in the distance. This route is an absolute haven for dispersed camping, boasting well over 100 distinct, accessible camp spots. These clearings range from small, intimate spaces for two vehicles to massive communal areas that can comfortably host 20 or more rigs; even on the busiest holiday weekends, finding an excellent campsite is practically guaranteed. About halfway through the route, drivers will encounter a narrow center washout that is easily navigated by simply straddling the gap. The trail concludes conveniently near the start of CR 205. Because this is a highly active recreational corridor, drivers must remain extremely vigilant for intersecting motorbike paths and crossing equestrian traffic.

Difficulty
Under typical dry conditions, X Road operates as a textbook Level 2 trail. The unmaintained dirt surface features minor erosion ruts strictly measuring 11 inches or less and a few short, manageable steep inclines. A careful driver in a 2WD high-clearance vehicle or stock AWD crossover can successfully navigate these obstacles, and the mid-trail washout can be safely bypassed by maintaining a centered line over the gap. However, a critical severe weather warning applies to this entire area: absolutely do not enter this trail if rain is present or forecasted. The local desert soil quickly transforms into a horrendous, impassable mud guaranteed to strand even the most highly capable 4x4 off-road trucks.
