Windy

Windy is an easy, highly accessible off-road route in the Tarryall Reservoir trail network that serves as an excellent gateway for families, OHV enthusiasts, and campers looking for expansive space and scenic views. Spanning approximately 2.7 miles with elevations ranging from 9,020 feet to 9,551 feet, this unpaved route is the most accommodating trail in the network for dispersed trailer camping, offering numerous open and wooded spots where large groups can easily set up camp. With a technical rating of 2, the trail consists primarily of a dirt surface and presents no major obstacles, making it highly suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, ATVs, and SxSs. While standard conditions are straightforward, wet weather can turn the dirt into slick mud, which can quickly make travel difficult for two-wheel-drive vehicles and necessitate a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The trail serves as a primary artery within the local trail system, allowing drivers to seamlessly access a variety of adjacent side routes and explore the surrounding public lands. At the southern end, where Windy connects with the Skinny trail, visitors will find unique rock formations that are ideal for hiking, alongside additional dispersed camping spots. This junction also features small dirt mounds and natural jumps that provide a fun playground for ATVs and SxSs to test their suspension. Running along Forest Service Road 144, the trail experiences about 284 feet of elevation gain and 569 feet of elevation loss, making it a scenic and pleasant drive through the mixed pine forests and open valleys of Park County, Colorado.
