Trail Overview
Windmill Loop Single Track is a challenging high-desert ride designed specifically for experienced dirt bikers and mountain bikers seeking a rugged, remote adventure with technical obstacles. Spanning approximately 7.9 miles through the scenic Bangs Canyon area near Grand Junction, Colorado, this demanding single-track trail climbs from an elevation of 4,957 feet to a peak of 6,604 feet, offering an overall elevation gain of 2,143 feet. The terrain is highly technical, characterized by tight, twisty segments that wind through dense trees, sandstone formations, and loose rock gardens. Riders must contend with numerous steep inclines and significant side-hill exposure that demands constant concentration, precise throttle control, and excellent balance, making it entirely unsuitable for heavy dual-sport motorcycles or novice riders.
Navigating this remote loop requires thorough preparation, as the route lacks trail signage and is easy to miss from the main path. To access the trailhead, travelers take Little Park Road to the Bangs Canyon trailhead, follow the Tabeguache Trail to the Windmill Jeep Trail, and immediately look for the unmarked single-track branching off to the left during the initial rocky climb. Because of the route's isolation and the lack of cellular service or easy emergency access, carrying ample water, food, navigation tools, and comprehensive tire repair kits is essential. The rocky dirt surface presents a true test of endurance and skill, rewarding well-equipped riders with stunning views of the surrounding canyon country and a classic Colorado backcountry riding experience.
