Trail Overview
Sims Mesa/Delores Creek offers a gentle, scenic drive through the Uncompahgre National Forest with views of the Uncompahgre River valley. The 1.8-mile route climbs gradually from 8,086 feet to 8,308 feet, starting on the well-maintained gravel of Sims Mesa Road before transitioning into an unmaintained Forest Service road. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for the latter section, where the surface becomes a dirt and caprock road with mild ruts.
The trail winds through aspen groves and seasonal wildflowers, eventually turning into Caprock Road. It leads to Delores Creek and ends near a small, quiet pond. This easy route is best suited for beginners and is highly scenic during summer and fall, though winter snow and spring mud can increase difficulty.
Access Description
No permits are required for this route. It transitions from a county-maintained road into the Uncompahgre National Forest. Vehicles must be street-legal or possess Colorado OHV registrations when entering Forest Service land, and travel is subject to seasonal closures during winter and early spring.
