Trail Overview

Start off through a valley, meandering along a beautiful rocky creek. Then climb out and head across some majestic forest land. The second portion offers a lot of different side roads to take, with a great deal camping for large RVs or motorhomes. Open June 14 to April 15.

Difficulty

Moderate. Rocky, muddy and washed out in places, very slow-going climb. Aggressive, high-clearance SUVs can do it with patience and careful tire placement.

History

Mines along the trail once supported the town of Manhattan, located east of the trail along F.S. 162 (see map for location). The town developed in the late 1880s bringing gold seekers with high hopes of striking it rich. Unfortunately, no big strikes were made and by 1915 the town was abandoned. It was finally burned down by the Forest Service in the 1950s and nothing remains today.

Trail is open all the way through. Some spots starting to get icy. Snow near the top. Had no issues at all going through. Trail is narrow in spots where fallen trees have been cut off the trail.

We ran the trail on 12/6 and it was open, but there was a sign at the trailhead stating the gate would be locked on 12/7!

Nice easy trail with several water crossings less than 4-8” deep. The tree that was previously blocking the trail was cleared.

Got about half a mile in from the south entrance and a tree has fallen into the trail. You can go around the backside of the trail and take it from that direction

This is not a 4/10 trail, very easy and most high clearance 2WD/4WD can complete it. Be wary of the river “crossings” if they flood, otherwise they are only about a foot deep.

It was a fun little bumpy trail. There were many interspersed rocky sections and 10 small creek crossings. We made it up fine in a bone stock JK Unlimited without scraping bottom. We definitely had to pay attention a few times or we easily could have hit bottom on some of the larger rocks.

extremely lush area at the beginning with about 4 Creek crossings. there is a pretty rocky area which you can see in the photos, but nothing too crazy. Great beautiful trail for any high clearance 4x4
