Trail Overview

Red Cone Pass is one of the most iconic trails in Colorado. The trail starts with a rocky, sometimes muddy climb through the trees before reaching timberline and the narrow ridgeline. From there, drivers continue to the summit of Red Cone Pass, where panoramic mountain views, a trail sign, and sometimes a flag mark the top. This is your last chance to turn around before the trail becomes one-way. The descent from Red Cone is steep and technical, requiring low gearing and light brake use, before the route ends near Webster Pass. A Colorado OHV sticker is required.

Difficulty

Red Cone Pass is very rocky as you navigate up through the Timberline. The ascents are not nearly as challenging as the descents.

Perfect blue sky day on Red Cone. Nobody there today. No snow. A little slush on the downhill from the peak. Gatekeeper was manageable. A few narrow spots in trees required a 3 point turn.

Made it on a klx300 and brother on klx230. Even being fuel injected we struggled to the top with elevation and the engines loss of power. The decent was harder than the climb. Hardest trail I’ve done in a bike. Worth the view!

Only thing that would make this a possible seven is the gate keeper. It continues to get worse. I would say this is a very hard 6, maybe the hardest but only due to the gate keeper. The wash outs are insanely deep now but not hard, just great filming opportunity. SxS continue to destroy the trail. There are some good size wash outs at the end while coming down because those idiots like to go up the wrong way and tear the trail up even though it’s clearly stated wrong way. They also enjoy parking on the tundra because rules don’t apply to them.

Very dusty. The gatekeeper and articulation section were a little washed out. Trial was doable in a stock 3rd gen 4Runner

The trail was beautiful but some sections were a little deteriorated. Water crossings were very low to almost non existent. Obstacles vary from rocks, deep ruts, and steep declines. I would highly recommend at least 35” tires if you are running a 4 door and front lockers were helpful if you want to take a harder line.

Always a fun trail. Was a little wet in spots. Frozen rain briefly at the top. Trail was clear.

Last time I ran this was 5 years ago. Gate keeper has since fallen down and was a lot easier. The big dirt ruts in the middle were the hardest part. Lockers were a big help, but was able to do it open. Trail was also a lot rougher, just lots of small rocks. I do not expect this trail to stay open if side by sides and dirt bikes continue to ride on the alpine tundra.

Trail is a bit muddier due to recent rains than normal.

Contrary to signage, the trail is open. Where Webster Pass connects to Hardcart is still blocked by snow. So OHVs will likely have to double back from the summit, others can continue down Webster into Montezuma.
